A MOTHER from Weymouth has found a unique way to help survivors of domestic violence - and is calling on local businesses to get the campaign off the ground.

Donna Pace, who has published several books about her own survival story, is hoping to have support messages and a helpline number printed on the back of bus tickets to give people a discreet way to get help.

Ms Pace - who, as a social activist, has given talks around the world in support of people affected by domestic violence (DV) - is in talks with bus ticket company Ticketmedia, and is hoping to raise £673 to fund the campaign.

It would mean local buses around Dorset would carry the tickets.

Donna said: "I know from experience how difficult it is to ask for help - especially during lockdown, or when your phone is being monitored - sometimes the school run is the only time domestic violence survivors are able to get away from the situation.

"I want to let people know they're not alone and that help is out there."

A ticket campaign for one week will reach up to 200,000 bus users. Local businesses and individuals who would like to become an advocate of DV awareness are being asked to contribute.

Donna added: "Lockdown took me back to my own situation and that sense of fear that's with you 24/7.

"For most people when lockdown is finished they go back to normal life, they're free again, but for victims lockdown is never really over until you're properly free from that perpetrator.

"I just want to be able to put that ticket, that piece of paper in their hand, then it's discreet - even if it's just to help one person, it will be worth it."

The campaign is being timed to coincide with a global action 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which starts on November 25.

Ticketmedia confirmed the organisation is offering a discounted charitable rate in recognition of the need to support victims of DV.

A spokesman for the company said: "Here at Ticketmedia we care about the things you care about. Whether its locally or nationally, we help you deliver your message into the hands of those that need it the most."
