WEYMOUTH'S Remembrance Sunday commemoration service has sadly been cancelled due to lockdown restrictions.

Organisations are instead being invited to lay wreaths at the cenotaph on Weymouth Esplanade during the Remembrance period, paying close attention to social distancing.

A service was due to take place at the Nothe Fort on Sunday November 8, but, following the national announcement on Saturday and the anticipated restrictions for England, Weymouth Town Council has had to cancel the event.

A council spokesman said: "We recognise this will be deeply disappointing. However, we are encouraging people to ensure Remembrance Sunday is still marked appropriately by taking part in remote and socially distanced Remembrance activity, whether that be watching the service on television or pausing for the two minute silence in their home or on their doorsteps.

"Organisations are invited to lay their wreath at the cenotaph over the Remembrance period but are asked to ensure times are staggered and that social distancing and government guidelines are observed at all times."
