RESIDENTS looking for a spectacular change of scenery during their daily lockdown exercise may be pleased to learn that Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens remains open to visitors.

Visits to public gardens are permitted under the latest Government rules - enabling people to enjoy fresh air and beautiful surroundings at the attraction during the current month-long lockdown.

Restrictions are in place however - and there will be limits on numbers of visitors permitted at any given time, so booking is essential. However guests can take advantage of a winter special offer which allows entry for £5 per person and includes a hot takeaway drink.

Martin Alderman, general manager of Abbotsbury Tourism, said: “Rest assured that safety of our visitors and staff is paramount. As a very large outside space, we have safety measures in place in the gardens, including social distancing, enhanced cleaning and limits on the number of visitors at any one time.

"Unfortunately our gift shop is not open but we are able to continue plant sales and the coffee shop will be serving takeaway refreshments.

"Toilet facilities are open and are professionally cleaned throughout the day. However some areas, including the Burma Rope Bridge and the children’s play area, are not open.

“We are always monitoring developments relating to Covid-19 and if we have to make any changes to our opening and visitor access, we will make further announcements.

“The gardens in winter are truly splendid, so please do come and enjoy them.”

Recreation, including visiting public gardens, is allowed during the current national lockdown period which is due to end on December 2. People can exercise or visit outdoor public places with:

  • the people you live with
  • your support bubble, or, when on your own, one person from another household
  • children aged under five, as well as disabled people dependent on round-the-clock care, are not counted towards the limit on two people meeting outside

The gardens are open every day from 10am until 4pm, last admission at 3pm.
