As far as I am aware, the powers recently invoked by the government are somewhat less comprehensive than that provided by the Emergency Powers Act, 1939 and amended 1940.

Parliamentary democracy has not been suspended, no nationalist government and wartime cabinet ruling by decree. Conscription and internment have yet to be applied.

In the same Echo edition as Mr Drax’s column the headline was of Dorset hospitals near capacity and cases still on the increase.

The reason we have a second lockdown is the government’s failure to contain the virus at every stage, there was no alternative.

Mr Drax states if the House was fully attended, MPs would vote out lockdown.

The motion was passed by a majority of 477.
