A FLAT was left severely damaged in a blaze from what is believed to have started from a tealight candle that was not extinguished overnight.
Firefighters from Weymouth Fire Station responded to a report of a sounding fire alarm at a flat on Radipole Lane, Weymouth at 7.19am on Wednesday, November 18.
Upon entering the second-floor flat, a fire was discovered within the living room.
Fire crews called for another water pump and firefighters from Portland Fire Station for further assistance to tackle the blaze.
The flat blaze was extinguished by firefighters using a water hose and the property was ventilated with a fan. No one was injured or harmed during this incident.
Photos shared by Weymouth Fire Station show the flat’s walls and ceiling have been left damaged by the smoke and a number of items were severely burned or destroyed.
The fire service believes the fire was started by a tealight candle not being properly extinguished overnight.
A spokesman for Weymouth Fire Station warned people to always take care with candles and remember to blow them out.
He said: “We take this opportunity to remind people that a high proportion of fires in the UK are started by inappropriate use of candles.
“If you are going to use candles, please remember to extinguish after use (or) place tealight candles in a non-combustible dish.”
A spokesman for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “One pump from Weymouth was mobilised to a report of an alarm sounding at a premises on Radipole Lane, Weymouth at 7.19am this morning.
“On arrival, the crew found that there was a fire within a flat and so a further two pumps, another from Weymouth and one from Portland, were called and the aerial appliance from Weymouth were sent to the incident.
“Crews used two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet, one main line and a positive pressure ventilation fan to extinguish the fire in the living room of the second floor flat.
“A reminder that alarms really do save lives!”
