A WINE producer based in Dorchester has beaten off competition from more than 700 entries from across the world to win a prestigious award.

Langham Wine Estate has been crowned the Sparkling Wine Producer of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) 2020 - which was last year won by French Champagne house Veuve Clicquot.

The IWSC, which was first held in 1969, was created to reward excellence in drinks worldwide and to ensure recognition for the very best wines and spirits.

Last week's awards ceremony was held over a live YouTube link, and staff at the Langham Estate were overjoyed to be announced the winner of their category.

A spokesman for Langham Wine Estate said: "We are all humbled and immensely proud to have been named the Sparkling Wine Producer at the prestigious IWSC. Winning an award of this pedigree is testament to the passionate hard work that the Langham teams of past and present have put into these wines.

"We are a small, single vineyard estate with one goal: to produce the most characterful and highest quality wine possible that reflects our site here in Dorset.

"We were so chuffed to be shortlisted with such great competitors and for us to top that list and knock Veuve Clicquot off is pretty impressive for an English wine.

"We are so meticulous in every step of the process from vine management to labelling our bottles and we are over the moon with this award."

Inspired by his father, Justin Langham planted the vineyard in 2009 on 30 acres of farmland just outside of Dorchester.

All of the sparkling wines that are produced by the Langham Estate are made using grapes only grown on the vineyard.

The spokesman added: "The English wine industry is going from strength to strength and is the fastest growing agricultural sector in the UK.

"As English wines continue to grow in popularity anyone visiting the area should take the time to visit Langham and enjoy a guided tour of the vineyard followed by a tasting of our award-winning wines."
