AN entire year group at a Weymouth school has been told to self-isolate as a precaution for a second time following a recent coronavirus case.
Wey Valley Academy, based on Dorchester Road, wrote to parents and carers on Sunday (November 29) after a student tested positive for Covid-19.
The school has launched an investigation into who may have had contact with the student and has advised all Year 8 students to self-isolate and learn from home.
Wey Valley Academy remains open to other students. It comes as the year group was previously told to self-isolate in late October after Covid-19 cases were confirmed.
In a letter to parents and carers, Principal Rob Russell explained he has taken the action as a precaution.
Mr Russell said in the letter: “We have been made aware of a student who has tested positive for Covid-19.
“Following this notification, we began an investigation into the students who may have had contact with the student during the time they were attending school.
“As a result of this investigation we are taking a precautionary stance and have made the decision that all Year 8 students will isolate as from Monday, November 30 they will return on Wednesday, December 9.
“We know that you may find this concerning, but we are continuing to monitor the situation and are working closely with Public Health England.
“This letter is to inform you of the current situation and provide advice on how to support your child. Please be reassured that for most people, coronavirus (Covid-19) will be a mild illness.”
Student who have been in close contact with the individual who has tested positive for coronavirus have also received a letter informing them they must stay at home for 14 days.
Other members of the household are allowed to continue normal activities provided their child does not develop symptoms within the 14-day self-isolation period. If they do, they will need to be tested.
Wey Valley Academy has advised parents and children that if their child develops symptoms of Covid-19, he or she must be tested via the NHS online portal or by calling 119. The household should also isolate until they receive the test results giving the all-clear.
