A MOTORIST apologised after he was 'far too close’ when overtaking a cyclist on a North Dorset road.

Police officers in North Dorset were on patrol in the area on Saturday, January 2, and saw a travelling cyclist wearing high visibility coat and flashing red light on his bike.

Officers observed how a driver dangerously overtook the cyclist and promptly informed the motorist of his error.

A spokesman for North Dorset Police said the driver apologised for his error as officers warned other motorists to leave plenty of space for cyclists.

He said: “This cyclist has a high visibility coat, flashing rear red light and was on a long stretch of road when an overtaking car came far too close.

“Fortunately the team were at hand and advised the car driver of his error - he was aware and apologised.

“Be aware of your abilities and give cyclists space.”
