MORE THAN 16,000 cases of coronavirus have now been recorded in Dorset after more cases were reported in the last 24 hours.

Data released by the Government show there have been 498 fresh Covid-19 cases in the 24 hours leading up to 3pm on Sunday, January 3.

In the Dorset Council area, there are 125 new cases, with an infection rate of 196.6 per 100,000 people.

These fresh cases mean that the total number of cases in Dorset Council now stands at 5,160.

A further 373 cases have been recorded in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council, which now has an infection rate of 389.5 cases per 100,000 population. There have been 11,186 cases in this area since the start of the pandemic.

Today's recorded cases are a decrease of 108 after 606 positive tests of coronavirus were reported in Dorset on Saturday, January 2.

Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, 16,346 people have tested positive for coronavirus across Dorset.

Covid-19 cases have continued to surge in recent days in Dorset, as Dorset Council was placed in Tier 3 restrictions while BCP Council area was placed at Tier 4 level on Thursday, December 31.
