A CARE home has launched an appeal for 100 birthday cards as one of its residents is set to celebrate a milestone birthday.

Joan Turner will turn 100 on Friday, January 8 and in light of the latest Tier restrictions that have been imposed, The Lindsay Care Home in Poole is asking people to send Joan a birthday card.

The team at the home hope to present Joan with the cards to celebrate the special occasion alongside her letter from Her Majesty the Queen.

The Lindsay has also arranged for Joan to receive video calls from her family and friends, so that she can celebrate with loved ones.

Home Manager, Claudia Carvell said: "Our local community continues to support us in difficult times and we’re really hoping that the same spirit can get 100 cards to Joan for her birthday.

"Joan has a wicked sense of humour and has the residents and carers in stitches. She is very much part of our family. We adore Joan and can’t wait to see her face on her birthday."

Joan's stepdaughter Angela Watson and granddaughter Sharon Ambrose both live in Derby where Joan was born.

Her other granddaughter Dawn Watson lives in Kent.

For them, this appeal is extremely important.

Angela said: "I managed to see her in July when restrictions eased. We saw her in a marquee outside the home but it wasn’t the same. We haven’t been able to go down at all since then. Whenever we speak to her about the situation, her answer is always 'I got through the war.'"

Sharon said: "The Lindsay is really trying to make sure that the residents don’t miss anything, but it’s really disappointing we can’t see her. The 100 birthday is hard because you don’t know how many more she’s going to have. It’s a big milestone.

"Nan gets on really well with the staff there, has a laugh, and is naughty with them, as she is with everyone.

"If she receives 100 cards, that would be amazing."

When asked what receiving 100 cards would mean to her, Joan said: "It would make my day.

"Reaching 100 is special and I can’t wait to see what the care home has in store – hopefully lots of cards and presents."

The Lindsay has also arranged a champagne lunch for the big day and several big surprises.

Anyone wishing to send Joan a card can post one to: Joan Turner at The Lindsay Care Home, 47A Lindsay Road, Poole BH13 6AP.
