A man found injured after an early morning caravan fire in a country lane has been taken to hospital.

Firefighters were alerted to the B3081 near Gillingham today after receiving reports of a blaze and the road, which leads up towards the A303, was closed for four hours.

The area where the fire occurred is near to North Dorset Rugby Club.

Police have now issued a statement and said a man suffered injuries.

A spokesman said: "Dorset Police was called by the fire service at 5.23am on Saturday 9 January requesting assistance at a caravan fire off the B3081 near to the junction with Field Lane in Gillingham.

"Officers attended and located a man nearby with injuries to his face and arms. He has been taken to hospital for treatment.

"The surrounding roads were closed to allow emergency services to deal with the incident and carry out an investigation at the scene. They reopened at around 9am."

The spokesman added: "Enquiries are underway to establish the cause of the fire and to ascertain the full circumstances of the incident. No arrests have been made."
