A YOUTH who ran away from police in Weymouth was later caught carrying suspected drugs and a hammer.

Officers were helped by members of the public after the youth ran off on the Rodwell Trail yesterday.

A spokesman for Weymouth and Portland Police said: "At 19:25hrs this evening (Friday), officers stopped and detained two young males in the ‘Wyke Road Tunnel’ of The Rodwell Trail for a drugs search.

"One of the males decided to run off from officers and was detained on Westwey Road after a lengthy foot pursuit.

"The same male was subsequently found in possession of suspected drugs, items associated with drugs supply and a hammer.

"The male was arrested and a search of an address was conducted a short time later.

"Enquiries into the matter continue. The search of the male who remained with officers proved to be negative.

"He was taken home and his left in the care of his parents.

"They were suitably advised regarding current restrictions.

"Many thanks to members of the public who assisted officers when they were in pursuit of the young male."
