AN enraged son threatened to ‘knock out’ his father before striking him with a baseball bat, a court heard.

Grant Chase, appearing via video link from HMP Exeter at Weymouth Magistrates Court, admitted assaulting his father by beating, using threatening words or behaviour towards his parents, as well as possession of cannabis.

Prosecuting, Elizabeth Valera, explained the 29-year-old had lived with his parents for a number of years after a restraining order was lifted.

She said: “They said there had been no issues with him but recently he has been drinking and tells us on the incident, at about 9pm on September 23, 2020, he went out and came back after midnight.

“She opened the door, he went to collect something and went out again. This happened five times during the night.

“His mother clearly didn’t appreciate getting up during the night.”

Chase, previously of Weymouth, was described as ‘drunk’ and ‘swaying’ was ‘very abusive to both her and his father’. Mrs Valera added Chase shouted several swear words at his parents.

At 5pm, Chase returned to the address, wielding a wooden baseball and began threatening his parents.

Referencing a victim impact statement, Chase said "I am going to use this and knock you out".

The court heard he swung the bat and hit his father on his arm, although no medical treatment was needed. After he left, Chase's parents locked the doors and called police.

Chase was arrested at the Red Lion pub in Gillingham later that evening. Officers discovered he was in possession of a cannabis grinder which contained a small amount of cannabis inside.

The court heard that Chase is subject to a suspended 20-week prison sentence. He is also due to be sentenced on February 17 at Bournemouth Crown Court after admitting aggravated burglary and wounding with intent at a commercial property in Gillingham on Tuesday, October 13, 2020.

Mitigating, Kenneth Sharpe, said: "He consumed a lot of alcohol with his friends, something in the sum of 10 pints.

“He felt his alcohol might have been spiked with Xanax. He didn’t take it, but he admitted he was on prescribed medication to help him sleep and that in turn would not work well with alcohol.

“He simply doesn’t recall the incident.”

Mr Sharpe added that Chase is back in contact with his parents and they have visited him while on remand.

He said: “On a positive note, he has made good with parents in that he has visited them when on remand and bridges appeared to have been mended.

“He has expressed remorse, apologised for his actions and hopefully their relations can move on from there.”

Chase will be sentenced on Thursday, March 4 at Bournemouth Crown Court.
