SHOPPERS got a shock when a glass panel fell from the window of WH Smith in Weymouth town centre, shattering onto pavement below.

Police were called to the scene in St Thomas Street this afternoon, and a cordon has been put in place around part of the entrance to the building.

Dorset Echo:

WH Smith remained open following the incident.

A spokesman for the chain said: “Unfortunately, a window in our Weymouth store has been damaged.

"Thankfully, none of our colleagues or customers have been hurt. We would like to apologise for any upset or inconvenience this may have caused.”

A member of staff at nearby Poundland said they were surprised to come out of the building to see a cordon in place, before learning of the incident.

Dorset Echo:

Meanwhile, eyewitness Sophie Jennings was in town when it happened and saw two boys on bikes who were nearby when the glass fell.

She said: "I was in Poundland, it must of happened within the five minutes when I was in the shop - I came out and saw and heard the aftermath.

"The glass had come outwards and landed on the floor. So it either just finally gave way, or it was broken from the inside.

"I hope the two boys who were on bikes are both okay. The poor lads had a window of a shop really high up combust and came smashing down. Police were still in the area warning people to stay clear of the buildings. Just wanted to send my love to the boys as that must have been terrifying."
