A MAN has been given a restraining order after assaulting his former partner on two separate occasions.

Charles Briggs, aged 61, of Belle Vue, in Weymouth, admitted to two assault by beating charges and also possessing a sharp object - namely a lock knife.

Weymouth Magistrates' Court heard how Briggs first assaulted the woman on July 28 at his home after a drunken row.

Prosecutor Andrew Newman told the court that Briggs became 'increasing verbally abusive and threatening' towards her after consuming alcohol.

Mr Newman said: "(The victim) was fearful and locked herself in his bathroom."

A statement from the victim read out in court said Briggs was bullying her for money, and while in the bathroom she called the police who came and arrested Briggs. She later discovered her bank card was missing.

Police arrested Briggs and found a lock knife on him.

The second offence happened on September 22 at his home again, where police arrested Briggs after another argument between the couple.

Mitigating, Simon Lacey, told the court that Briggs has mental health issues and bipolar disorder.

Briggs, who does not work and claims employment and support allowance (ESA), was given a 30-day community order and was told he must abide by a four-month curfew at his home address, and wear a electronic tag for four months.

He was also given a one year restraining order preventing him from contacting his former partner.

He was told to pay a victim surcharge of £95 and costs of £85.
