A MAN was rescued from a first floor flat as six crews attended a fire in the early hours of the morning.

Firefighters were called out to attend the fire in Friars Moor in Sturminster Newton at 12.34am this morning. When they arrived, smoke could be seen coming out of the window.

Six crews from Sturminster Newton, Blandford, Shaftesbury and Gillingham attended the scene, along with seven fire engines and an aerial ladder platform.

The fire was contained to the one flat and the occupant was led to safety by firefighters. He was then taken to hospital by ambulance as a precautionary measure.

The fire was believed to have started accidentally, as a result of smoking materials.

No other flats were affected and there was no need to evacuate other residents.

The fire was extinguished using six breathing apparatus, two hose reels and a main line, the stop came at 2.17am. Positive pressure ventilation was then used to clear the smoke.
