NO DECISION has been made yet on whether one of Bridport's biggest events will be going ahead this summer.

Organisers of the Bridport Carnival have provided residents with an update on whether the event will be able to take place this year.

The event would usually take place in August, however many crowd-gathering events are being cancelled or postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Bridport Carnival was one of many events to be cancelled in 2020 as a result of the start of the pandemic.

Graham Davies, chairman of the Bridport Carnival, said: "As a committee we are just waiting a little longer before making a final decision as to whether we hold this’s year carnival or not. We have been in contact with other carnival committees, who are also delaying making a decision.

"We have to remember it is not just the procession, but that people are social distancing and therefore unable to build floats.

"We have been looking at the prospect of organising a virtual doorstep torchlight show but are concerned about selling the torches online, where we cannot be sure they are they are sold to over 18s. The torches we normally use also burn for too long to use on the doorstep but we are looking into alternatives.

"All of this is such a shame as, we would love to build on the great success of the 2019 carnival and torchlight processions. We received so many messages and emails saying these events were the best for many years on all fronts."

He added: "Rest assured we will be back and we will provide both local people and visitors a fantastic spectacle."

The last Bridport Carnival went ahead in 2019 and saw the festivities go on for an entire week, before culminating in the carnival's popular torchlight procession from Bucky Doo Square to West Bay.

The procession saw hundreds of people line the streets as a number of creative floats lined up on West Street, before making their way up to the town hall and down South Street.
