AN interactive map using government data has revealed the number of coronavirus deaths in Dorset.

The interactive map, by the Office for National Statistics, allows you to see the number of deaths registered from March 2020 to January 2021 where Covid-19 was the main cause on the death certificate.

Tracking deaths across large areas since the pandemic began, the size of the circle on the map represents the number of deaths.

Neighbourhoods are broken down via Middle layer Super Output Areas (MSOAs), a system designed to improve the reporting of small areas with an average population of around 8,000.

January saw an increased number of coronavirus-related deaths as the country fought against new variants which were more transmissible, and resulted in fatalities reaching record numbers.

The interactive tool allows you to see the impact in your area.

The ONS has analysed details of deaths that occurred in England and Wales between March 1, 2020 and January 31 where Covid-19 was the underlying cause or was mentioned on the death certificate as a contributory factor.

As local data is only available up to January, the numbers of deaths in the map will not reflect the latest trends meaning the impact on the England-wide lockdown will not be seen.

Patterns also do not reflect the most recent case numbers, as a death from the virus will be reported some time after a positive test.

It comes has 38 new coronavirus cases were confirmed across Dorset, according to the latest statistics released on Thursday, February 25.

PHE also said more than 18,000,000 people in the UK have received the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

82,301 residents aged 70 and above in the Dorset Council area have had their first jab while 62,760 people aged 70 and over have received their first dose in the neighbouring Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council area.
