WEYMOUTH Town Council is inviting residents to an online Full Council meeting to share their thoughts about the Dorset Council Local Plan, which will shape the area for the future.

The plan sets out guidelines for meeting the region's housing, infrastructure and facilities needs for the future.

It contains proposals for around 2,720 new homes to be built in the Weymouth Town Council area by 2038, as well as regeneration of the town centre and waterfront to the west of the main shopping area.

Weymouth Town Council is to host a meeting to discuss the proposals at 7pm on Tuesday March 9, when councillors will discuss feedback from residents and their response to the consultation.

Ahead of the meeting, the town council is encouraging residents to submit their views, questions or concerns relating to the local plan for discussion.

Residents can also request to attend the virtual meeting to speak directly to councillors.

To submit your question to Weymouth Town Council, or to request to attend the virtual meeting, email office@weymouthtowncouncil.gov.uk or call 01305 239839.

The meeting will be live-streamed on Weymouth Town Council’s Facebook page at facebook.com/WeymouthWTC

Weymouth mayor councillor Graham Winter said: “The Local Plan will set out planning policies which will impact on the future of Dorset. It’s important for local people to have their say so we can get a plan that works for Weymouth.”

And councillor David Harris, who is chair of the town council's Finance and Governance Committee, is encouraging everyone to take part in the meeting - even if they do not wish to speak.

Cllr Harris said: “We are holding this meeting to help us finalise our response to the massive, but important plan after hearing the views of residents on the issues specifically affecting Weymouth.

"It is also an opportunity for residents to hear the views of councillors on key aspects affecting housing, employment and the environment in our town, so please join us even if you do not wish to say anything.”

Once put into place, the Dorset Council Local Plan will be referred to guide planning applications until 2038.

The plan will go through several phases and will include a further chance for feedback on the ‘soundness’ of the plan. It will also be scrutinised by the planning inspectorate before it is adopted.

Key points for Weymouth in the Local Plan include:

  • The regeneration of Weymouth town centre, including around 400 new homes
  • Investment in flood defences
  • An urban extension to the north of Littlemoor, including a business park and around 600 homes
  • Around 100 homes to be built at land off Louviers Road
  • Around 350 homes on land at Wey Valley, west of Dorchester Road
  • An additional 150 homes at land south of Wey Valley
  • Around 400 homes to be built at land west of Southill, with supporting infrastructure
  • Land at Markham and Little Francis to deliver around 500 homes with supporting infrastructure
  • Around 37 homes to be built on former Value House site, Wyke Regis
