AN investigation has been launched by police after a number of catalytic converters were stolen from parked vehicles across North Dorset.

North Dorset Police say officers responded to 'a spate of thefts of catalytic converters' in areas of Sturminster Newton, Shaftesbury and Sixpenny Handley on Monday, March 8 and Tuesday, March 9.

The converters, which control exhaust emissions, contain metals Rhodium and Palladium and the prices of the metals have increased since last year.

A spokesman for Dorset Police confirmed that no arrests have been made and have urged people to remain vigilant.

He said: "We received a report that between around 8pm and 8.30pm on Monday, March 8, a catalytic converter was stolen from a vehicle parked in a driveway at Honeymead Lane in Sturminster Newton.

"At 11.50pm on Tuesday, March 9, we received a report that a catalytic converter was stolen from a vehicle in Springfield Close in Shaftesbury.

"A further report was received that between 9.45pm and 10pm on Tuesday, March 9 a catalytic converter was stolen from a vehicle in Sheasby Close in Sixpenny Handley.

"Officers have been making enquiries into these incidents. No arrests have been made at this stage.

"We will continue to investigate all reports of this nature but we would also ask you to take preventative measures where possible to stop these incidents from happening.

"Park the rear of your vehicle close to fences, walls or a kerb or keep your vehicle in a garage where possible. Alternatively, aim to park in a well-lit and well-populated area.

"If you’ve been a victim or witness any suspicious activity in the area, please report this to us via our website or by calling 101. Please always call 999 if a crime is in progress or there is danger to life."
