A BUSY commuter route in North Dorset which closed for ageing pipework to be replaced was today reopening to all traffic - four weeks earlier than planned.

Wessex Water has been carrying out the work on the B3143 in Pulham, near Sherborne, since February 1, meaning the road was closed between Pulham Business Park and Holwell Road. Two separate diversions were put in place for light and heavy vehicles.

Workers have replaced ageing pipework in the area that has been prone to bursts while carrying out essential work to improve water quality in the area.

The project had been due to run until April 23, but Wessex Water’s main laying team have worked extended hours to finish well ahead of schedule and without interrupting customers’ water supplies.

Paul Delves, who has co-ordinated the work for the company, said: “I’d like to thank Pulham residents and local businesses for their support, which has enabled us to push on with these essential main replacements and lift the road closure four weeks early.

“Replacing ageing pipework will help to prevent leaks and bursts, as well as improving water quality for the community.

“We appreciate this is a busy commuter route and there was a lengthy diversion, particularly for heavy vehicles. We’re sorry if anyone experienced delays to essential journeys.”

Wessex Water had previously written to residents and business affected, as well as liaising with school bus companies to arrange temporary stops.
