A NEWLY-released prisoner has been arrested after a package containing 'controlled substances', tobacco and mobile phones was allegedly thrown over a prison fence.

Police have said a 28-year-old man has been arrested today after a package was thrown over the fence of HMP YOI Portland on March 21.

A spokesman for Weymouth and Portland Police said: "On March 21 a package was thrown over the perimeter fence of HMP YOI Portland. Inside was a significant quantity of controlled substances, tobacco and mobile phones.

"Following an investigation into this incident, supported by Weymouth crime scene investigators, HMP staff and regional intelligence partners, a 28-year-old male has today been arrested on his release from the establishment. He will be assisting us with our enquiries and our investigation will continue.

"This type of crime has a significant impact on the stability of the prison. It will not be tolerated, and we ask that if members of the public see anything suspicious around the perimeter of the prisons that 999 is called immediately."
