DORCHESTER town crier Alistair Chisholm has remembered the times he met Prince Philip, who he said he had a lot of respect for.

In October 2016, Mr Chisholm welcomed the Queen, who was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, with a cry in Queen Mother Square during a royal visit.

Mr Chisholm had previously met Prince Philip in Sarawak, a Malaysian state on Borneo, in 1965.

Mr Chisholm was in southeast Asia teaching English at a secondary school in Kuching when he was invited to a ceremony, which would feature the Duke who at that time was the Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Gurkha Rifles.

Mr Chisholm said: "It was 1965, I was 20 years old and teaching in Sarawak. I was invited to an evening event in Sarawak.

"Prince Philip was representing the Gurkhas who were fighting alongside the British during the Indonesian conflict.

"I was introduced to him and shook his hand. He was very polite and formal.

"I have a lot of respect for role he played. He did his job with amazing patience all without losing his great character.

"I'm saddened he's died. I imagine it's great shock for everyone because the majority of the population have only known the current head of the monarchy."
