Now that the Civic Society is hopefully to take control of the sadly neglected Brewers Quay, I would recommend they also take an interest in the Old Assembly Rooms in Trinity Street opposite Hope Church.
That building is of historical interest and was the Head Office of Devenish Brewery with the board room in the upper room of the building.
The right-hand side of the building was also offices and known as the ‘coffin shop’.
I have seen this building deteriorate over the years, and feel it should be a preserved building, as is the Tudor House further along the road.
It was a big mistake to shut the Timewalk and other facilities within the building as it was a tourist attraction, especially at Christmas with the coach parties and also as a wet weather venue as Weymouth doesn’t have that sort of facility.
Preserve the town’s history otherwise it will be lost forever.
