A CONVOY of classic cars is set to descend on Weymouth Esplanade this weekend.

To celebrate National Drive It Day and raise cash for charity, a group of keen motorists in Weymouth will cruise down the seafront around 11am on Sunday - completing several circuits.

The event will be spearheaded by the Weymouth Vehicle Preservation Society (WVPS) with the event sponsored by the Federation of Historic British Vehicle Clubs (FHBVC) to raise cash for the charity Childline.

Peter Griffin, WYPS chairman, said: "Traditionally National Drive It Day marks the start of the classic vehicle season.

"It's sponsored by the FHBVC to raise funds this year for the charity Childline.

"The WVPS will be driving their cars along the seafront in Weymouth on Sunday completing several circuits between 11am and 11.30am.

"This is our first opportunity for over 12 months to do so, and to show the local residents that we are still active.

"We have more than 100 members, but we never know how many will turn up on the day - many I suspect.

"Over the last 35 years the WVPS has raised more than £80,000 for the specific benefit of local charities and we will continue to do so as soon as the current Covid-19 regulations permit."

National Drive It Day was created by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs in 2005.

It is also a chance to raise awareness and support amongst the public for the historic vehicle movement and keeping transport heritage on UK roads.

David Whale, Chairman of the FBHVC said: "National Drive it Day has its place as a symbolic season opener - a chance to get historic vehicles of all shapes, sizes and types out in use, seen by the public and enjoyed

"It’s a statement of national importance because, not only does it ensure that our transport heritage continues as a moving, working, living experience, but also raises awareness of the size, importance and contribution that the historic vehicle movement makes to the world."
