POLICE have dealt with a woman who climbed the Weymouth Harbour safety railings to dance on the harbour wall.

The incident happenened at around 7pm yesterday evening. The girl was seen 'dancing' on the wall, egged on by cheering crowds at Custom House Quay.

Two police officers descended the steps from the town bridge to speak to the girl.

As officers arrived she appeared to dangle herself over the edge of the harbour wall, before climbing back under the railings to safety.

It comes after questions were raised on whether the railings will be effective as a safety measure, with groups of drinkers regularly seen climbing the barrier to sit on the harbour side of the wall.

As reported, the railings were installed by Dorset Council this month at a cost of around £40,000.

The council has stated the railings were installed to prevent accidents, with the money coming from a pot of funding granted to the authority by central Government to help prepare the town for visitors as lockdown restrictions ease.

But the project has been marred by controversy as residents and the town council, including local ward councillors, were not consulted or informed beforehand.

The council later stated that the railings are temporary and will be removed after summer.
