A NEW mayor of Chickerell has been appointed for this year.

Councillor Elspeth Turner was elected as mayor of Chickerell at the town council's virtual Annual Statutory Meeting on Wednesday evening.

Cllr Turner is taking over the role from Cllr Mogg who has served as the town's mayor the previous two years.

In her acceptance speech, Cllr Turner said: "Due to the pandemic, some planned initiatives have not been able to progress as outgoing mayor Councillor Mogg had hoped. I look forward to building on those he began - 'green Chickerell' in particular.

"I hope to focus on the younger people in the town and would like to involve them in a 'Pride in Chickerell' drive."

The mayor has two distinct roles, as chairman of the town council and first citizen for the town. The role of mayor is distinct from that of councillor and the mayor acts in a non-political manner when carrying out the civic role.

First elected in June 2015, Cllr Turner has served as a town councillor for almost 6 years.

Councillor John Worth was elected as Deputy Mayor and Councillor John Dean as Civic Representative.
