A MAJOR emergency services operation was launched to rescue a man in distress on cliffs on Dorset's Jurassic coast.

Police, coastguards, fire and ambulance crews were called to the incident yesterday evening following concerns for the man's welfare.

Rescuers worked at the scene for around three hours before the man was brought to safety.

A police spokesman said: "Dorset Police received a report at 8.30pm on Tuesday May 11 raising concern for the welfare of a man on the cliffs at West Bay near Bridport.

"Officers attended with HM Coastguard, fire and ambulance services.

"The man was brought to safety at around 11.20pm and taken to receive the appropriate care."
