There's been a crackdown on abandoned vehicles left around the streets of Westham in Weymouth.

Police have made authorities aware of a number of untaxed vehicles dumped in the area.

Officers from the Westham Neighbourhood Team on patrol yesterday said they noticed that 'a number of abandoned untaxed vehicles that we have recently reported to the council and/or DVLA have been clamped or recovered.'

It came as the team were out conducting crime enquires and carrying out anti-social behaviour patrols.

Residents who have concerns about potential abandoned vehicles can report them to Dorset Council.

For a vehicle to be considered 'abandoned' it must be parked on public land/highway (such as a residential road) and not be taxed. The council's enforcement team receive around 1,300 legitimate reports of abandoned vehicles each year, with about 60% qualifying for enforcement such as fines, clamping and/or removal.

In partnership with the DVLA and Dorset Police, Dorset Council have committed resources to remove abandoned vehicles from the highway. These actions are part of a wider enforcement programme across Dorset which also targets fly-tipping and littering.
