A 100-YEAR-OLD cinema in Dorset is set to reopen.

The Rex Cinema, in West Street, Wareham is one of the longest running independent and is set to welcome back film-lovers on May 28.

The treasured venue, which opened in 1921, has seen its interior refurbished through grants, which has been completed throughout 2020 - including including a new stairlift and a remodelled Art Deco bar.

This autumn, the Rex will be at the heart of the Purbeck Film Festival which will present its 24th film programme from October , showcasing an incredible and diverse range of films.

The cinema received grants from BFI, The Talbot Village Trust, The Coop, Original Style Tiles, Sainsbury’s, Rotary Club of Wareham, Wareham Lions and many other groups.

A spokesman from the cinema said: "As we commence our countdown to the return of the Rex, we would like to give heartfelt thanks to all of our dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers who help to keep the cinema running.

"We will make sure that it remains at the heart of the community into its next century."

The community cinema is run by a registered charity and has 47 volunteers.
