A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of assault after a man was seriously injured. 

Police officers responded to a report of an assault on Weymouth Town Bridge at 6.37pm on Saturday evening (May 22). Dorset Police say this originally took place on St Thomas Street, but has since clarified the location of the alleged assault. 

A man was airlifted to hospital by air ambulance with serious head injuries, Dorset Police say. A man has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

A large emergency services presence was seen in the area, with five police vehicles, two ambulance vehicles and a South West Police Forensics vehicle parked in the area.

As reported, a police cordon was in place, as a witness said blood could be seen on the pedestrian path, with a police cordon around the footpath and a section of the path on Trinity Street.

A spokeswoman for Dorset Police said: "At 6.37pm on Saturday, May 22, Dorset Police received a report of an assault on Town Bridge, close to the junction with Trinity Street in Weymouth. 

"Officers and the ambulance services attended and a man was taken to hospital by air ambulance with a serious head injury.

"One man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and is helping officers with their enquiries."
