PEOPLE are being encouraged to go out and take pictures of memorials and monuments in celebration of the Royal British Legion's (RBL) 100-year anniversary.

The Weymouth RBL branch is running a challenge to get people to send in pictures of local memorials and monuments until the branch has received 100 pictures of different sites in total.

The monuments and memorials do not have to be related to war and it is hoped that by challenging people to take part by taking pictures of them, it will give them an opportunity to stop and think a bit more about the history which is around them in Weymouth all the time.

Naomi Turner chairs the Weymouth branch and said she was confident that there would be 100 different memorials and monuments to photograph locally.

She said: "Taking a photo is something anybody can do. There is all sorts of history in the town that people miss. Plaques are sometimes just four inch squares, but you have only got to really look for them to see them around."

At the end of the year the branch plans on posting the 100 photos of different monuments and memorials that have been sent in on their public Facebook page.

The Weymouth RBL branch was also founded 100 years ago and has been able to help the Armed Forces community in the town with support from local volunteers.

The RBL is very active across the county with approximately 8,400 Legion members, with the RBL branch in Weymouth being just one of 30 branches, which are supported by 15 RBL Clubs.

The charity was formed in the aftermath of the First World War to fight for the rights of those who had given so much and come back to so little. Today, the RBL continues to provide life-changing help and support to the Armed Forces community and challenge injustices on their behalf.

We at the Dorset Echo are appealing to our readers to donate to the RBL by visiting dorsetecho.co.uk/RBL or sending a cheque payable to Dorset Echo in an envelope clearly marked ‘RBL donation’ and mailing it to Dorset Echo, Fleet House, Hampshire Road, Weymouth, Dorset, DT4 9XD.
