PLANS to carry out a range of maintenance and repairs at an East Dorset tower have been approved.

Listed building consent has been given by Dorset Council to carry out a variety of work on Horton Tower, which includes replacing broken window panes and preventing further damage with clear polycarbonate stable 'glass'.

Knowlton Parish Council was in favour of the scheme for the grade II listed building, stating that it is proposal which "helps to improve local communications and sustain the historic tower".

A report from a Dorset Council planning officer said: "The scheme has been well considered and reversible and will not harm the special character of the listed building or character and appearance of the conservation area."

Horton Tower, located near Chalbury Common, is said to have been built as an observatory.

The folly comprises of seven storeys, with turrets rising from the five floor.It received listed status in 1955.
