TOURISTS and thrill-seekers have been warned to ‘stay away’ from ‘dangerous’ cliffs at a Dorset beauty spot after a stranded teenager sparked a large emergency services presence.

Firefighters, police officers, and the coastguard were called out at 1.30pm on Friday, June 4 to rescue a 14-year-old boy stranded on a ‘grassy slope’ on the cliffs, which was approximately 25 to 30 metres above the beach.

The teenager was safely rescued and lowered onto the beach at Durdle Door by coastguard officers as police officers cleared a section of the beach.

While the boy was unharmed, various figures were keen to stress to tourists not to climb the cliffs, with Dorset Council describing it as a ‘reminder of how perilous and dangerous our beautiful coastline can be’.

It comes after an air ambulance was called to the 'very crowded beach' at Durdle Door on Tuesday, June 1 after a person had dislocated their shoulder after jumping into the water.

A spokesman for Dorset Council said on Saturday: “Please stay away from cliffs.

“Many emergency responders were called out to rescue a person who had become stranded 25m above the beach at Durdle Door yesterday.

“Another reminder of how perilous and dangerous our beautiful coastline can be.”

A spokesman for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service pleaded with visitors to not climb the rocks or cliffs and spoke of how these incidents can ‘tie up so many of our resources’.

He said: "A crew from Bere Regis Fire Station along with tech rescue teams from Poole Fire Station and Weymouth Fire Station as well as an aerial ladder platform, have been working hand in hand with the Lulworth Coastguard Rescue Team this afternoon to rescue a teenager from the top of Durdle Door cliffs.

"It’s half-term and the weather has been beautiful, so we know many of you will be wanting to spend it in some of the beauty spots we’re so lucky to be local to, but please don’t climb the rocks or cliff edges in these areas.

"This incident, and many others like it, tie up so many of our resources. Stay safe everyone."

A spokesman for Lulworth Coastguard Rescue Team said on Friday afternoon: “Lulworth, Kimmeridge and Wyke CRT’s along with a Cliff Rescue Unit from Dorset & Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service we’re tasked to a cliff incident at Durdle Door this afternoon.

“Two Cliff Techs, one from Lulworth CRT and one from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service were lowered to a casualty who was stranded on a grassy slope 25-30 metres above the beach.

“The casualty, a young male, was secured in a rescue strop by the Lulworth Cliff Tech and with the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service Tech acting as a guide the casualty was recovered safely to the beach.

The Lulworth First Responders were on hand but no medical attention was requested.

“Lulworth Estate car park staff aided by Dorset Police cleared the beach immediately below the casualty and affected a safety cordon for public safety.”
