'It's a shame some have to ruin it' - Anti-social motorists at car meet slammed

Local police officers, as well as officers from Devon and Cornwall Police and traffic officers, monitored the planned events at Chesil car park along the Portland Beach Road and Mount Pleasant Park & Ride in Weymouth on Saturday evening (June 5).

Photos and video shared on social media appear to show drivers performing donuts and drifting around a car park. Hundreds of car enthusiasts are said to have attended the car meet at Chesil car park.

Tyre marks have been left on sections of the Weymouth park and ride site with some litter left behind.

Organised by Beyond City Car Meets UK, a spokesman shared online how it was a ‘fantastic evening’ and ‘lovely too see ya all.’

While police officers praised the behaviour of the majority attending, they were investigating reports of anti-social behaviour and disorder.

Councillor Peter Barrow, who represents the area for Dorset Council, admitted that he has not yet received complaints from residents – but was keen to resolve any anti-social behaviour at the park and ride site.

He said: “If people want to come to Weymouth with their flash expensive cars, behave well and have a nice day out then that’s fine.

“It’s a shame other people have to ruin it in such a manner. It would be good for the police to track down the culprits who caused the damage.”

He added it could be explored whether or not measures could be put in place to prevent such car meets and anti-social behaviour at the park and ride site.

Councillor Barrow said: “It would be good if the police could follow it up and stops them from doing it again.

“We will be chasing it up in the week with the council and will be following it up.”

The Dorset Police No Excuse team attended the Portland car meet. A spokesman said it was ‘great to see car and bike enthusiasts visiting the area along Chesil and Portland Bill'.

But officers say ‘several traffic offences were dealt with’ along with some ‘isolated disorder’. While some motorists were penalised, police say they will be following up some reports of anti-social behaviour and disorder.

A spokesman for Weymouth and Portland Police said they were thankful of the motorists who were ‘well behaved and engaged well with officers’ but said they will be investigating offences from the evening.

He said: “Officers from the Neighbourhood Team will be making follow up enquiries in relation to last night’s car meet.

“We will be dealing appropriately with those who were witnessed committing Road Traffic Act offences last night who couldn’t be stopped and spoken to at the time.

“We will also be working with local businesses and the relevant Local Authorities to look at long term solutions to reduce anti-social driving in the future.

“Finally, many thanks to the majority of attendees who were well behaved and engaged well with officers during the evening.”
