AN 11-YEAR-OLD has been growing his hair to donate to charity - and is calling for bullies who have challenged him over his charity mission to change their mindset.

Riley Weeding from Weymouth has been growing his blonde locks for more than two years after he was inspired by a story of donating hair to the Little Princess Trust - a charity set up to help people who have lost their hair due to various reasons.

However, Riley's mane-growing project has become marred by naysayers, including both children and adults.

Riley, of Dorchester Road, lives with his mum 44-year-old Becki Frampton, who said she is 'very proud' of her son for carrying on with the project despite some days coming home in tears.

She said: "A couple of years ago I was reading a magazine and there was an article about growing hair the Little Princess Trust - and how it helps people suffering from illness.

"Unfortunately it's not just children bullying him, it's adults too. I've lost count how many times Riley has had to explain he's doing it for a charity. I've heard adults say he looks like a girl - it's blatant ignorance.

"On a few occasions he's come home in tears, but even after all the bullying he's carried on. I'm very proud of him."

Certain requirments when donating hair to the charity must be met including tresses being in excellent condition. Growers are also encouraged to produce at least 12", but the greatest need for hair donations are 16" (41cm) or longer.

Riley's hair is now at the minimum required length of 12" (30cm) and a date has been set to have his crops chopped.

Riley said: "As well as helping someone who has lost their hair, I want to change the mindset of the naysayers.

"I feel emotionally comfortable with long hair and I want to inspire others and normalise being different.

"Although I feel more confident and independent, I'm ready to have it cut off now - it can get very heavy and hot."

Donators are also urged to raise £600 in order for the head of hair to be turned into a wig.

As a result, Riley and his mum have set up a Just Giving page.
