A LOCAL police road safety champion and a young apprentice are among this year's British Horse Society (BHS) award winners.
Police constable Heidi Moxam and young apprentice Karl Jenkins are among the 36 winners of the 2020 BHS’s Annual Awards.
The BHS Annual Awards reward and recognise the outstanding achievements of the equine charity's volunteers, supporters, and partners.
All of the 2020 winners will be presented with their awards at the official BHS Awards ceremony in November this year.
Karl Jenkins, now an apprentice at Royal Armoured Corps (RAC) Saddle Club at Bovington battled with significant mental health problems from a young age.
Through his newfound love for horses and the equestrian community, Karl’s self-confidence soared. Karl completed the BHS’s Changing Lives through Horses programme and landed an apprenticeship with RAC Saddle Club, learning invaluable skills that will open doors for a bright future within equestrianism.

Karl has been acknowledged through the BHS award for showing exceptional growth and commitment to his personal development.
PC Heidi Moxam from Dorset Police has been given the Safety Award, recognising her leading role in the ‘Close Pass - Horse Safe’ initiative which spread the BHS’s important Dead Slow messages to tens of thousands of drivers and road users across the county. The Safety Award is given for excellent service by a person, persons, or group in the cause of road safety in their community.
As the driving force behind building a relationship between Dorset Police and the BHS through her work on this initiative, Heidi organised public events to create awareness for road safety for horse riders, gaining high engagement on social media, as well as producing safety literature and hi-viz gear.
Tributes to the 36 award winners were led by BHS President Martin Clunes OBE, ahead of National Volunteers’ Week.
BHS President, Martin Clunes said: “Huge congratulations to all our 2020 award winners.
"I never cease to be amazed by all the fantastic people who make the Society what it is – an awesome collective of people who not only love horses but are dedicating their lives to broader equestrian wellbeing.”
BHS Chief Executive James Hick said: “2020 was like no other year, but we got through it thanks to all our volunteers, affiliated groups and supporters who worked tirelessly with the BHS teams across safety, access, welfare, education and participation, despite all the challenges.
"The BHS Awards are our way of acknowledging and celebrating those who made an extra special contribution in aid of our charitable work over the past 12 months – so congratulations to them, but I also want to pay tribute to the many hundreds of others who make the Society what it is.”
