MEMBERS of staff at a Bridport café were able to put out a fire caused by a faulty fuse box.

A fire broke out at the Red Brick Café on St Michael's Trading Estate at around 8am yesterday morning.

A staff member who was on duty at the time was able to extinguish the fire, with help from a neighbour on the estate, using a fire extinguisher.

A spokesperson for the Red Brick Cafe said: "One of our partners was in the cafe in the morning and noticed a small fire had started.

"She acted very quickly and did a great job of putting it out with help from one of our neighbours. The fire service, Western Power and the electricians then arrived very quickly after.

"The important thing is how quickly it was sorted out, everybody helped us out immediately and we'll be able to open tomorrow thanks to everyone's hard work."

Three fire crews arrived on the scene at 8.20am to find the fire had already been extinguished and the building evacuated. They then ensured the area was safe and found the cause of the fire to be a faulty electrical distribution board.

A spokesperson for the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service said: "We were called to St Michael’s Trading Estate, Bridport at 8.20am for a small fire on the first floor of a café.

"Two crews from Bridport and one from Charmouth attended, and found the fire was in an electrical distribution board.

"The stop came at 8.49am, the fire was extinguished by internal isolation of the electricity, and Western Power was on site by 9.20am to make it all safe externally."

Western Power was on site by 9.20 am to make sure everything was safe externally and checked the whole building was safe to reopen.

The Red Brick Café will be opening as usual today.
