A COVID-19 testing site near Weymouth's town centre is shutting down its operation.

The Swannery Car Park coronavirus testing site, which has been running since early January, will close on Saturday (June 26) and is set to be replaced by a mobile testing unit.

Public Health Dorset is the behind the replacement of the testing site with a mobile testing unit on Weymouth Train Station's overflow car park, which will begin operation on Monday (June 28).

According to Public Health Dorset, the reason behind the change is because mobile testing units provide wider communities with access to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests.

A spokeswoman from Public Health Dorset, said: "The Swannery Car Park local testing site will close on June 26 and will be replaced with a mobile testing unit at the Weymouth Train Station overflow car park from Monday.

"The mobile testing units help us to provide access to PCR testing for more communities in response to local need.

"We already have mobile testing units that regularly attend sites in Portland, Dorchester, and Bridport as well as several sites across the BCP Council area."

Public Health Dorset urge members of the public to use the service to take an on-site test if they have at least one of these three Covid-19 symptoms - a high temperature, a new and continuous cough, or a loss or change in sense of smell and taste.

Residents will be able to check which sites are available on the day that they book a PCR test via the gov.uk portal.
