I see that Mike Joslin is having one of his rants again, this time on reducing CO2 emissions.

Whilst I entirely agree that they should be reduced, I am astonished at his comment that the Prime Minister should “cut the use of cars by one day a week”. How on earth does he propose that should be achieved?

No politician of any party would legislate for that as they would be too fearful of the public backlash and of losing their seats.

Having spent over 40 years in public transport, I can assure Mr Joslin that motorists would give up anything except their cars.

There are only two ways to reduce car use. The first is to make the purchase price and operating cost so expensive that only the rich would be able to afford one.

The second is to have a complete ban on parking in town and city centres and force motorists to use a Park and Ride scheme. This has already been achieved with outstanding success in places like York and Oxford, where catching the Park and Ride bus has become the norm. Any sort of ban has to come with a substantial improvement in public transport.

The building of a multi-storey car park at Dorchester Hospital is ridiculous as it will simply encourage more people to drive.

There is no doubt that a massive reduction in car use should be a priority but councillors and politicians will never agree to it for the reason stated above.
