The Belvedere, in the town’s historic High West Street, announced it would remain shut ‘for a while’ while members of the team isolate.

In a Facebook post, landlady Lyn Mackenzie, said: “To all our lovely customers, due testing positive for Covid we’re going to have to close for a while! Other team members have also tested positive but luckily have been having time off.

“Obviously we don’t want to but that’s just the way it has to be as we don’t want to run the risk of Bowie transmitting it to anyone whilst we isolate upstairs because we know how much you love to give him cuddles.

“Thank you for all the support you have given us and we’ll be back behind the bar serving you all again as soon as we’re able.

“We will keep you updated, keep safe.”

The closure comes after businesses in Weymouth revealed they had been struggling to recruit staff amid the Covid pandemic, while others have also been forced to close due to staff having to isolate following positive tests.

The Belvedere only reopened in April following after being shut for months due to strict restrictions.

During that time, Lyn has overhauled the venue and transformed a formerly derelict skittle alley at the site into a ‘pirate ship’ featuring hand painted murals depicting a historical timeline, a huge fireplace built from scratch, and intricately carved panelling – providing jobs for local craftsmen during lockdown. The new attraction was launched earlier this month.

The pub has also joined forces with The Veterans Hub to sell burgers made by veterans as the community rallies round to support each other as much as possible following a tough year.

The menu features four burgers which have all been made, packaged and transported to the pub by veterans who use services provided by The Veterans Hub. For every burger that is sold, a percentage of the sale is put back into The Veterans Hub so the charity can continue to support veterans and their families.
