Letter sent to Dorset Highways regarding signalled pedestrian crossing on Abbotsbury Road, Weymouth

Following the article in the Dorset Echo I write to object to the proposal on behalf of Weymouth and Portland Access Group.

The crossing near Holland Road provides a useful and safe crossing point across the busy Abbotsbury Road.

You will be aware that despite the recent improvements at the nearby Newstead Road crossroads there are still problems at that location relating to the amount of turning traffic, and the adverse camber on the footpath alongside the former Rock Hotel. The presence of the crossing near Holland Road has the effect of calming traffic speed in this densely populated commercial and residential area.

The Access Group echoes the concerns raised in the Dorset Echo about the value of the crossing to customers of local shops, and in particular those of Boots and Rapid Mobility.

Although only a pedestrian crossing it also assists some cyclists wishing to access the northern end of the Rodwell Trail.

It is submitted that the proposed removal of this crossing will have a disproportionally high detrimental impact on people with disabilities, on elderly people, and on people caring for young children.
