Coastguard officers have thanked two off duty nurses and staff from Fancy's Farm for helping the man before paramedics arrived.

A spokesman for Portland Bill Coastguard Rescue Team said: "The team, along with Wyke Coastguard, were tasked by Solent Coastguard to provide casualty care to a male walker who had fallen and suffered a head injury, at the High Angle Battery on Portland.

"On our arrival we found the gentleman being assisted by two off duty nurses and staff from Fancy’s Farm. Casualty care was given by the team and once South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust paramedics arrived, he was treated for his injuries.

"Due to the nature of his injuries it was decided that the best route of transport would be by aircraft. Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance was tasked and on landing the casualty was stretcher carried the short distance to the awaiting aircraft to be taken to Southampton Hospital for a full assessment.

"Once the aircraft departed, both teams returned to their stations.

"We’d like to say thank you to the two off duty nurses and staff from Fancys Farm for the assistance prior to our arrival, and all the best to our casualty in his recovery."

An eye-witness said: "An 75-year-old gentleman fell between eight and 10-ft onto the concrete gunning placements at Verne High Angle Battery.

"He was being treated at the scene and is being taken to hospital in an air ambulance.

"Two ambulances and two coastguard vehicles were also there."
