THE mayor of Portland said she was "very disappointed" at discovering yobs had spray painted along a sea wall on Chesil Beach.

Police said they were made aware of the graffiti on the sea wall below The Cove House Inn pub on Thursday, July 15 but believe that the damage was caused at the end of June and are now investigating the act of vandalism.

Mayor of Portland, Sandy West, has blasted the criminal damage and said she was "obviously very disappointed" to see it at the well-known Dorset beauty spot.

She said: "Chesil Beach is such a magnificent place and for some idiot to come along to spray the wall - it is ridiculous.

"I like graffiti if it is in the right place, some of it can be beautiful - but this is just vandalism, people travel for miles to come to Chesil Beach.

"I think it is disgusting, I don't get the mentality of people that do that sort of thing. I'm obviously going to talk to people to find out how it can be cleaned up but whoever did it should be really ashamed of themselves.

"I understand how frustrating things have been, but Chesil Beach is part of the Jurassic Coast, it's a beautiful World Heritage Site - to me it just seems senseless."

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: "We received a report on Thursday 15 July 2021 of criminal damage to the sea wall at The Cove on Portland. It is believed the damage may have been caused around the end of June 2021.

"Enquiries remain ongoing into the incident. No arrests have been made."

A spokesman for Portland's Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "It's sad to see such a beautiful location being damaged like this.

"If anyone has information about this damage, please contact Dorset Police and quote occurrence number 55210113163."
