POLICE were forced to disperse a large group of young people who tried to stop a friend being arrested.
Officers were called to the Greenhill area of Weymouth last night.
A spokesman for Weymouth and Portland Police said: "Officers arrested a male in the Greenhill area on suspicion of assault.
"This was following reports of a disturbance on The Esplande earlier in the evening between a group of young people.
"Whilst officers dealt with the detained male a number of his friends tried to intervene.
"A group of young males and females had to be dispersed by officers away from the area.
"A Section 35 dispersal order has now been authorised for a period of 12 hours which gives officers extra powers to exclude those intent on causing issues away from the town centre. Officers remain on patrol in the area."
