DORSET rider Brad Jones is set to undergo surgery today, British Superbikes have confirmed.

Jones, 23, crashed out on the exit of Clark Curve during the first lap of the opening race at Brands Hatch on Saturday.

His bike flung him from the saddle at high speed in a 'highside' crash where he collided with a barrier, sustaining serious head, chest and pelvic injuries.

Stalbridge man Jones was unconscious at the scene and airlifted to King's College Hospital, London, before medics put him in a medically-induced coma.

Surgeons will operate on Jones' pelvic fracture to stabilise the injury.

"Operations have not been required for his head or chest injuries, but a procedure is planned to stabilise his pelvic fracture today," a MotorSport Vision Racing statement said.

"Following that, it is anticipated that he will kept in the medically induced coma until the beginning of next week.

"The MSVR BSB Medical Team remain in direct contact with the family and hospital staff.

"The family wishes to reiterate their sincere thanks for the overwhelming support they have received.

"Further information will be released when possible. Additional updates are not expected prior to next week."

PR Racing, Jones' team, have adorned their bikes with messages of support for this weekend's fourth round at Thruxton - Jones' home track.

Jones is riding in his debut British Superbikes season, stepping up to Britain's elite level after two runner-up seasons in Supersport, the tier below.

His team have set up a JustGiving page, raising more than £6,500 to aid Jones' recovery.
