THE FIRST in a series of fireworks displays will take place tonight.

Displays will be held every Monday in August, with fireworks ignited from a vessel in Weymouth Bay.

The displays, which can be viewed from the seafront and beach, usually attract thousands of visitors and will begin at 9.30pm.

In previous years, there have been just three displays but, at a committee meeting of Weymouth Town Council in July, councillors voted to allocate an extra £7,000 to the fireworks displays budget to fund two extra displays.

Two of the upcoming displays - on August 16 and August 23 - will be lower noise displays where the fireworks will not make the same 'bang' sound that they are associated with for the benefit of those who are sensitive to loud noises.
