A NEW home is to be built behind a popular independent shop on Weymouth Esplanade.
A planning application has been approved for a two bedroomed maisonette to be built on the premises of Weymouth Rock and Fudge, 71 The Esplanade - however the business is to continue trading as before.
Dorset Council has granted change of use permission and listed building consent for conversion of storage space that is no longer used by the gift shop.
Architecture firm BD Drawing Studio, acting on behalf of the applicant, commented: "The works at 71 The Esplanade represent a benefit in terms of renovating a disused space, as well as benefitting the environs by improving the visual impact of the building.
"Internal layout changes have been designed to create a space which is comfortable and practical. Historically interesting architectural elements are to be retained where possible."
The alterations affect a section of the building facing Great George Street.
Dorset Council commented that the works would preserve the character and appearance of the listed building and of the surrounding conservation area.
Weymouth Town Council also had no objection to the changes.
