This magnificent sand sculpture of a cathedral on Weymouth beach was created by Jack Hayward in the 1950s.

It was posted to our Facebook nostalgia group We Grew Up in Weymouth and Portland by Terry Maine and this picture of a very busy beach was taken by Terry's late father Alex Maine.

Sand sculptor Mark Anderson, grandson of 'the Weymouth sandman' Fred Darrington, said Jack Hayward's work was more figurative than his grandfather Fred's.

Mark tells us: "To my knowledge, he and Jack worked side by side for a few years but I have scant information on Jack and his years on Weymouth beach.

"If anyone has any info on him, I would love to know more."
