WEYMOUTH Carnival has been cancelled after its director resigned.

This year's carnival was originally due to go ahead last weekend before being postponed until 2022. However those plans will not go ahead as the carnival committee has folded.

Director Seb Green said he was faced with a difficult decision but has had to step down for mental health reasons.

He also cited a lack of financial support and volunteers - possibly due to people being reluctant to lend support in the wake of the pandemic.

"Unfortunately this means the CIC company will fold and the committee will be disbanded, so the carnival will no longer go ahead next year, unless somebody else steps in," Mr Green said.

"But anyone who does decide to come forward will have my full support."

Coincidentally the news comes on the third Wednesday in August - the day the carnival is usually held.

Previous iterations of the carnival have been marred with difficulties over the years as successive organising groups have pulled out.

Mr Green added: "I'd like to say a personal 'thank you' to all the committee members past and present for their commitment, dedication and hard work.

"And a thank you to the local businesses who have supported us over the last two years."

He will continue to run the carnival's Facebook page, sharing updates about events in Weymouth. It can be found at www.facebook.com/WeymouthCarnival
